Family collections are rarely neatly labeled and organized. They grow in albums, junk drawers, file cabinets, inherited boxes, and envelopes no one has opened in years.
And while the materials themselves may survive, the information attached to them can disappear surprisingly quickly. Names are forgotten. Dates become guesses. Photographs become unidentified. No one remembers why a particular document was saved.
I help bring order to physical family collections while preserving the relationships between the photographs, documents, people, places, and stories they contain.
The goal is to create an archive that is easy to access, understand, & share.
WHAT'S INCLUDED IN EVERY PRINT & PHYSICAL ARCHIVING PROJECT
Every collection is different. Depending on the materials, their condition, and the scope of the project, services may include:

Every project begins with an assessment of what you have, where it is currently stored, how the collection is organized, and any immediate preservation concerns. We'll also identify what matters most to you and where the work should begin.

Materials are sorted into a logical structure based on the collection itself. That might mean organizing by family, person, date, event, material type, or another system that makes the archive easier to navigate.

Whenever possible, the names, dates, places, relationships, events, and other known information are kept with the materials they describe. Existing labels, notes, inscriptions, and other contextual information are preserved rather than separated from the collection.

I'll help determine appropriate storage for the materials in your collection and replace damaging or unsuitable storage materials when they fall within the scope of the project.

An organized archive should make sense to someone who wasn't there when it was created. Your finished collection includes documentation of its organization so you, and the people who eventually inherit it, can understand what is there and how to find it.

I'll identify materials that may need additional attention, such as fragile photographs, deteriorating albums, aging media, or items that should be digitized, and provide recommendations for their long-term care.

No. In fact, it can be helpful to see the collection as it currently exists. Existing groupings, envelopes, boxes, labels, and even seemingly insignificant notes can provide useful information about where materials came from and how they relate to one another.

Projects may include printed photographs, albums, scrapbooks, letters, cards, journals, recipes, family documents, children's artwork, newspaper clippings, and other paper-based family materials.
If the collection also contains home movies, negatives, slides, digital photographs, or significant objects and heirlooms, we can determine whether those should become part of this project or be addressed through another Evidence of Being service.

That's okay. You don't need to know exactly how much you have before reaching out. Part of the initial assessment is determining the size and scope of the collection.
Large or multigenerational collections can also be divided into manageable phases rather than addressed all at once.

Not without your involvement. Decisions about removing, discarding, or separating family materials are made according to an agreed-upon plan. My role is to help you understand and organize the collection, not decide for you what your family should value.

I can help organize the identification process and document the information your family already knows. That may include reviewing photographs with relatives, comparing images and existing records, and creating a system for recording names, dates, places, and relationships.
I can't guarantee that every unidentified person or photograph can be identified.

The initial assessment can identify materials showing signs of deterioration or requiring specialized care. I'll recommend appropriate next steps and, when something falls outside the scope of my services, recommend that it be handled by an appropriate conservation professional rather than attempting work that could damage the original.

Yes. Digitization can be incorporated into a larger archiving plan or handled separately through Digitization & Media Preservation.
Importantly, digitization doesn't have to mean discarding the originals. For many family collections, the physical object remains an important part of the archive.

That's a perfectly reasonable place to begin. We can start with what is physically present, preserve any information that came with it, establish what is known and unknown, and build an organized record from there.

It depends on the size and complexity of the collection. A single photo library may require considerably less time than decades of photographs spread across multiple devices and storage locations. After the initial assessment, I'll be able to give you a clearer project scope and timeline.
SOMEDAY, SOMEONE WILL WANT TO KNOW
Who wrote the recipe card with the stained corner? Why did your grandmother keep that particular letter? Whose handwriting fills the margins of an old book? Where did the little wooden box come from, and why did nobody throw it away?
There are things we inherit without knowing their stories. Photographs with unfamiliar faces. Jewelry worn by someone we never met. Children's drawings, newspaper clippings, handwritten notes, and ordinary belongings that somehow survived decades of moves, marriages, births, and deaths.
And sometimes, the person who could have told us what they meant is no longer here to ask.
Preserving a family collection isn't just about protecting the objects themselves. It's about recording what we know while we still know it, so the next person who opens the album, unfolds the letter, or inherits the box has more than the object left behind.
